Rock Hill, SC
The work of Danish Abstract Expressionist artist Hans Petersen is always a bold aesthetic experience of stimulating themes in spiritous colors and textures. Hans attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art, in Copenhagen to study architecture but his love for abstract expressionism intensified with inspiration from the mid-20th century CoBrA movement, especially Danish artist Asgar Jorn. To this day the basic CoBrA principles of complete freedom of color and form influence Hans’ bold and colorful subject matter that ranges from unconventional women to dynamic abstract art forms.
Hans began his professional life as a graphic designer, moving to NYC he became a principal and creative director for a successful design firm and taught classes at the School for Visual Arts. He relocated to Charlotte, NC in 1991 where his innovative graphic design style distinguished the International Home Furnishings Center’s promotional material for over 15 years. In 2005 Hans began his journey a full-time painter. True to his CoBrA roots, Hans’ work is not limited to a single signature style. Rather he prefers working in series that have a continuity of his vision. His work is in galleries in NY, NJ, WI, CA and FL and with collectors in the United States and Europe. The Arts Council of York County recently presented A Decade’s Odyssey, a solo show retrospective of Hans’ work over the last ten years.
Artist Statement: Painting with impact brings me pleasure. I strive to infuse distinctive color, energy and character into my work to achieve excitement for myself and others. If it goes unnoticed, it simply wasn’t worth (while) painting.
