Karen Maugans

Karen Maugans Gallery, Asheville, NC

Karen grew up in the kaleidoscopic mountains of Vermont where she developed a profound connection with the ever-changing beauty and fragility of the natural world. Her photographic subjects reflect her reverence for the subtle, and often overlooked intricacies of Mother Earth’s bounties.

A photographer from a young age, Karen developed unique lighting techniques and composition styles in the context of studio-based still life tableaux, inspired by 1700th century still life painters. Her work is often mistaken for paintings. Karen’s meticulously composed images containing flowers, edibles, sea shells, feathers, pine cones, tree bark, heirlooms and hand-crafted treasures, as well as her totally unique images of smoke with glass have earned her many coveted awards from juried, fine art competitions.

After living in many parts of the US, Asia and Europe, Karen has settled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
