Kevin Howard Aloe Frost
Lucama, NC
Aloe Frost is a cohesive collection of ceramics, focusing on, but not limited to, unglazed, whimsical figural planters, designed and individually handmade by self-taught potter, Kevin Howard. Raised on a family farm in eastern North Carolina and a graduate of UNC-CH with a degree in Southern Studies, his lifelong interests in art, history, archaeology, traditional folkways, and plants merged when he discovered pottery as a hobby in 2016 while looking for a creative outlet away from the daily work of the farm and nursery businesses. He got his start with the Dan Finch Potters in Bailey, NC, where he had access to their equipment before eventually setting up his own studio on the farm. After many long nights practicing, he started selling online in 2018 and within a year was featured by Etsy and soon was able to transition to making pottery full-time, developing a recognizable style with a simple, natural look and feel achieved through the use of different-colored clay bodies and stains. His core collection centers on the Moodies, a group of light-hearted people and animal planters, each individually wheel-thrown and sculpted with their own unique personality.
